SWP Calculator
SWP CalculatorEstimate Regular Withdrawals and Portfolio Value
A Systematic Withdrawal Plan (SWP) allows you to make regular withdrawals from an existing investment portfolio over a selected period. The Hexo Wealth SWP Calculator helps illustrate how your withdrawal pattern may affect your portfolio over time, considering factors such as current portfolio value, SWP tenure, expected returns, starting monthly withdrawal, annual step-up in withdrawals, and inflation-adjusted extra withdrawals. The calculator estimates the total amount withdrawn during the selected tenure, the portfolio value remaining at the end of the period, and whether the portfolio may be depleted based on the assumptions entered. These estimates can help you understand how different withdrawal strategies may influence the sustainability of your investment corpus over time.
Why Use an SWP Calculator?
Managing regular withdrawals from investments requires balancing current cash-flow requirements with the amount that remains invested.A higher withdrawal may affect how long the portfolio lasts, while future requirements may also increase over time.
How may different monthly withdrawals affect my portfolio?
Will my investment corpus last throughout the selected withdrawal period?
How may increasing withdrawal requirements affect the portfolio?
How may inflation affect additional future withdrawals?
What impact could extra withdrawals have on my portfolio?
How might different return assumptions influence portfolio sustainability?
Understanding the Calculator Inputs
01
Current Portfolio Value
This is the starting investment corpus from which regular and additional withdrawals are considered.
02
SWP Tenure
This is the number of years for which the withdrawal illustration will run. The calculator allows the scenario to be projected for a tenure of up to 60 years.
03
Expected Returns (p.a.)
This is the annual return assumption converted into a monthly rate for mathematical calculations. The calculator accepts positive returns between 1% and 20%. Actual market returns may vary.
04
SWP Mode
Choose a fixed monthly withdrawal amount or an annual percentage of your original portfolio value. The calculator divides the annual percentage-based amount by 12 to determine your starting monthly withdrawal, without recalculating it annually.
05
Step-Up SWP
Choose unchanged withdrawals or annual increases using a percentage or fixed rupee amount. The Step-Up starts in Year 2, with percentage increases compounding and fixed increases remaining constant.
06
Extra Withdrawals
Include occasional withdrawals alongside regular SWP payments to estimate their impact on your portfolio. Enter the withdrawal year, amount in today’s value, and inflation assumption for adjustment.
What Does the SWP Calculator Show?
Starting Monthly SWP
The monthly withdrawal used at the beginning of the illustration. Where the percentage mode is selected, this amount is calculated from the starting corpus and annual withdrawal percentage.
Total SWP Withdrawn
The cumulative amount withdrawn through regular monthly SWP payments during the selected tenure, subject to the available portfolio value.
Total Extra Withdrawals
The cumulative inflation-adjusted extra withdrawals actually deducted from the portfolio. Where the requested withdrawal exceeds the amount available, the calculator limits the withdrawal to the available portfolio value.
Final Portfolio Value
The estimated investment corpus remaining at the end of the selected SWP tenure after accounting for returns and all applicable withdrawals.
Portfolio Depletion
This indicates whether the portfolio remains available throughout the selected tenure or reaches zero during a particular year. The output may show: Not Depleted Depletes in Year X
Portfolio Value Over Time
The chart illustrates the estimated year-end portfolio value throughout the selected withdrawal period, reflecting assumed returns and withdrawals.
Year-Wise Schedule
The year-wise schedule provides a breakdown of withdrawals and portfolio performance, including the opening value, monthly SWP, extra withdrawals, ending value and portfolio status.
Portfolio Status
The calculator classifies each year as Growing, Stable, Declining, At Risk or Depleted based on the portfolio's estimated performance and depletion timeline. These indicators are estimates, not investment advice or predictions.
How Does the SWP Calculator Work?
01
The calculator begins with the Current Portfolio Value and applies the Expected Return assumption using an equivalent monthly rate.
02
Extra withdrawals are deducted at the start of each year, while monthly growth is applied before each month-end SWP withdrawal.
03
Where selected, the monthly SWP is increased annually from Year 2 by the percentage or fixed amount entered.
04
If the portfolio reaches zero during the illustration, subsequent years are shown with a zero balance and a Depleted status.
Who Should Use This Calculator?
This calculator is useful for investors planning regular withdrawals from mutual fund investments. It helps estimate withdrawal amounts, potential portfolio growth, remaining balance and how long their investments may last under selected return and withdrawal assumptions.

- — Investors considering annual withdrawal increases
- — Individuals expecting occasional additional withdrawals
- — Anyone exploring possible portfolio depletion under different assumptions
Common SWP Calculation Mistakes
Treating Assumed Returns as Permanently Fixed Rates
The Expected Return entered remains constant for the calculation. Actual market-linked returns fluctuate and may differ materially from the assumption.
Selecting Withdrawals Without Considering the Tenure
The same monthly withdrawal can produce different outcomes when applied for different periods.
Ignoring Increasing Future Expenses Over Time
Future withdrawal requirements may increase over time. The Step-Up and inflation inputs can illustrate this effect.
Ignoring Occasional Large Additional Withdrawals
Additional withdrawals can materially reduce the amount remaining invested and may result in earlier depletion.
Treating Portfolio Status as a Recommendation
Growing, Stable, Declining, At Risk and Depleted are mathematical labels based on the entered assumptions. They do not determine whether an SWP amount is appropriate.
Relying Only on the Total Amount Withdrawn
The total withdrawn does not show the remaining investment value, so both figures should be reviewed to understand the estimated outcome.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
An SWP Calculator estimates how regular withdrawals may affect an existing investment portfolio over a selected period.
It also estimates the total amount withdrawn, Final Portfolio Value and possible portfolio depletion.
Yes. You can enter an annual percentage of the Starting Portfolio Value.
The calculator divides the resulting annual withdrawal by 12 to determine the Starting Monthly SWP.
Yes. You can keep the withdrawal unchanged or apply an annual percentage or fixed-amount Step-Up from Year 2.
Yes. Enter the withdrawal year, amount in today’s value and inflation assumption.
The inflation-adjusted amount is considered at the start of the selected year before the monthly SWP begins.
Portfolio Depletion indicates that the estimated portfolio value has reached zero during the selected tenure under the assumptions entered.
It does not predict that the actual investment portfolio will deplete in that year.
No. The calculator provides mathematical estimates only.
Actual mutual fund returns, withdrawals, inflation, taxation, investment costs and market conditions may differ from the assumptions used.
Important Calculator Disclaimer
This SWP Calculator is provided for educational and illustrative purposes only. The results are mathematical estimates based on the information and assumptions entered by the user and should not be considered a forecast, assurance or guarantee of investment returns, portfolio sustainability or future withdrawals.
The Expected Returns (p.a.) and other assumptions entered are used solely for calculation purposes. Actual outcomes may differ materially due to market performance, inflation, withdrawal behaviour and other factors.
The withdrawal illustrations, Portfolio Sustainability Status and portfolio values displayed by the calculator are estimates only and should not be interpreted as financial advice or a promise of future results.
Regular SWP withdrawals are assumed to occur at month-end for calculation purposes. Additional withdrawals are assumed to occur at the start of the selected year before the regular monthly SWP begins. Future additional withdrawal amounts are calculated using the inflation assumption entered by the user. Actual inflation may differ from the assumption used.
Actual investment outcomes may also be affected by taxation, applicable exit loads and other scheme-specific costs or factors that may not be reflected in the calculator.
